How to use transparent PNG images in PowerPoint, Google Slides and Canva
What a transparent PNG is, how to insert one without a white box, how to recolor icons, and where to find free transparent PNG illustrations.
A transparent PNG is an image without a background. Instead of a white rectangle, you get just the object, so it sits cleanly on any slide color, photo or gradient. It is the easiest way to make slides look designed instead of assembled.
How to tell if an image is transparent
- The file ends in .png (JPG files can't be transparent).
- On our site, transparent images are shown on a checkerboard and marked PNG · Transparent.
- When you place it on a colored slide, there is no white box around it.
Free sets to start with: pictogram icons and 3D-style illustrations for slides.
PowerPoint
- Insert → Pictures → This Device, then choose the PNG.
- Drag a corner (not a side) to resize, so it doesn't stretch.
- To match your brand color: Picture Format → Color → pick a recolor option. This works best on flat icons.
- Add a soft shadow (Picture Effects → Shadow) if the object looks like it's floating.
Google Slides
- Insert → Image → Upload from computer.
- Use Format options → Recolor to tint flat icons.
Canva
- Uploads → Upload files and choose the PNG.
- Drag it onto your design; transparency is kept automatically.
Design tips
- One icon per idea. Put a small icon next to each bullet point; it makes a slide faster to scan.
- Keep icons the same style on one slide: all flat, or all 3D, not mixed.
- Leave space. An illustration next to a short headline works better than a crowded slide.
- Size them consistently. Line up icons on the same baseline and at the same height.
A note about "remove background" tools
You can remove a background yourself, but edges often come out jagged. Starting with an image that was made for a clean cut-out saves time. Every PNG here is free for personal and commercial use, with no credit required.
