How to make YouTube thumbnails with free background images

Pick a background that leaves room for text, crop it to 16:9 and keep it readable on a phone screen.

A thumbnail has one job: make someone stop scrolling. A good background image does half of that work, as long as it leaves room for your face, your text and your story.

1. Start with the right size

YouTube recommends thumbnails at 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9). Our images are 1024 × 1024 squares, so you'll crop them:

Tip: choose images where the interesting part sits in the middle band of the picture, so nothing important is lost when you crop the top and bottom.

2. Look for "copy space"

The best thumbnail backgrounds have a calm area, like sky, a blurred wall or an empty table, where text can sit. Try searches such as:

If nothing fits, use the Generate images button on the search page and describe the empty area you need, for example "cozy desk on the left, empty wall on the right".

3. Make text readable

Thumbnails are mostly seen on phones, at about the size of a thumbnail on your finger. To keep text readable:

4. Keep a consistent style

Viewers recognize channels by color and layout. Pick one or two background styles (for example, warm interiors for a vlog, or neon tech scenes for gadget reviews) and reuse them, changing only the subject.

5. Check before you upload

Shrink your finished thumbnail to around 320 pixels wide and look at it. If you can still read it and understand it in one second, it's ready.
