Choosing and optimizing featured images for your blog
How to pick a header image that matches your post, write good alt text and keep pages fast.
The featured image is the first thing readers see on your blog, in search results and when a post is shared. It doesn't need to be fancy. It needs to fit the topic, load quickly and describe itself well.
Pick for the topic, not just the mood
Readers decide in a second whether a post is for them. An image that hints at the topic helps:
- A recipe post → the dish or its ingredients
- A productivity post → a tidy desk with a notebook
- A travel post → a recognizable type of place, like a coastal road
Avoid generic "business people shaking hands" style images. They add nothing.
Crop for every place it appears
The same image often appears in three shapes: a wide header, a square card and a social share preview (usually around 1.91:1). Before you upload, check that the subject still looks good when cropped to each shape. Images with the subject in the center are the safest choice.
Write useful alt text
Alt text describes the image for screen readers and helps search engines understand it. Good alt text is short and specific:
- Weak: "image", "blog header"
- Better: "Laptop and coffee cup on a wooden desk by a window"
Every image page on RoyaltyFreeHub suggests a description you can copy and adjust.
Keep it light
Large images slow your page down, and slow pages lose readers and search ranking. Before uploading:
- Resize to the largest size your theme actually shows (often 1200 to 1600 pixels wide).
- Save as WebP or a quality-80 JPG.
- Aim for under 200 KB for a header image.
Most blog platforms and image editors can do all three in one export step.
Name the file
Rename image-123.jpg to something like home-office-desk-morning.jpg. It costs nothing and helps image search.
