How to set a wallpaper on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android
The quickest way to change your desktop and phone wallpaper on every system, the right image sizes, and where to get free high-resolution wallpapers.
Changing your wallpaper is the fastest way to make a device feel new. Here is how to do it on every common system, and which image size to download so it stays sharp.
Pick the right size first
| Device | Shape | Good size |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop / desktop | 16:9 landscape | 1920 × 1080 or larger |
| iPhone / Android phone | 9:16 portrait | 1080 × 1920 or larger |
If the shape doesn't match, your system will crop the image, and the part you liked may disappear. That's why we keep separate desktop wallpapers and phone wallpapers in the right shapes.
Windows 11 / 10
- Right-click an empty spot on the desktop → Personalize.
- Choose Background → Picture → Browse photos and select your image.
- Set Choose a fit to Fill so the image covers the whole screen.
Mac (macOS)
- Open System Settings → Wallpaper.
- Click Add Photo (or Add Folder to rotate several images) and pick your file.
iPhone
- Open the image in Photos, tap Share → Use as Wallpaper.
- Pinch to position it, then tap Add and choose lock screen, home screen or both.
Android
- Long-press an empty spot on the home screen → Wallpaper & style (the name varies by phone).
- Choose My photos or Gallery, pick the image and set it for the home screen, lock screen or both.
Tips for a cleaner screen
- Desktop: choose images with the subject away from the left edge, where icons usually sit.
- Phone: calm areas at the top keep the clock readable; avoid busy details behind your app icons.
- Dark wallpapers save battery on phones with OLED screens.
